Agriculture is the art of cultivating land for obtaining food and other items from plants and animals. The word Agriculture is made up of two words – Agri and Culture. Agri means field and Culture here means “to cultivate”. Agriculture includes crop plantation (farming), animal rearing (for extraction of animal products) and even fishing.

India is mainly an agricultural country. A large portion of the population is involved in agriculture in some way. A large percentage of land in India is being used for agricultural purpose. Most people associated with agriculture are based in rural areas.

After India got independence, the agricultural sector has grown rapidly. Agriculture accounts for the major portion of India’s GDP. India exports agricultural products to other countries. Agriculture also provides employment and employment opportunities to people.

After various successful agricultural revolution like green revolution for food grain and white revolution (milk), India’s position as major producer of agricultural product has increased even more. Today, India is the largest producer of milk in the world. The main crops grown in India are rice, bajra, jwaar, pulses, wheat, maize, jute, groundnut etc

Today, the major challenge is increasing the agricultural output without increasing land are as there is no more vacant arable land. After independence, the forest cover was reduced significantly to make more land available for agricultural purpose. Also, the drought and floods cause immerse damage to farmers and severely affect them financially, specially the small farmers.
