Nerve Impulses travel in one direction

This is due to the refractory period i.e. Na+ channels are open or recovering.
The refractory period allows the voltage sensitive ion channels to restore their original polarity
Absolute refractory period - Na+ channels are open or recovering
Relative refractory period - Occurs when the membrane is hyperpolarised (-80mV), where the K+ channels are open. Action potentials are more difficult to generate during this period relative to resting potential (-70mV)

i think it is because of Synapse between neurons.

k..listen...imagine the flow of traffic..its uni-directional..similarly..the impulses too travel in one direction.otherwise,there are chances of mixing up of impulses,which will be terribly chaotic!
the synapse only ensures tht they travel in one direction.

PostSubject: Re: Nervous Coordination Wed Feb 18, 2009 3:01 pm

no...no....no...here is the answer::
the axon ending has connection with another cyton(synapse).when impulse reaches the axon ending bulb,it produces neurotransmitters which freely transmit the impulse to the cyton.so cyton cannot pass an impulse to an axon as it cannot produce nerotransmitters.the synaptic bulb produces them.so impulse travels only in one direction...now got it sunny

It is uni directional because once the region next to the exited region is polarised the previous region becomes repolarised and once the tension crosses the nueron to the next the terminal end release acetylcholine which is a chemical which sets a new impulse in the next nueron, this chemical is slowly broken down by an enzyme and the previous nueron is back to normal and everyone is Happy!!

both answers are right...i.e. hari and vallabh...so write both....+ one mor thing....the polarization n repolarization part is not in syllabus...but, just go through it!! as you all know, my teacher is very very famous in giving whatever is not in boardd!! so i learnt it....now, you all go through it too!!!
